🤔 Did you know:
>Grocery stores refuse to stock the ‘not so good looking’ or Ugly Produce which is perfectly ready to consume. 133 billion pounds of food is being thrown away because of its appearance, regardless of it being safe and edible. That’s one-third of the food produced every year.
>According to a UN report (2017), 1.4 billion hectares of land (equivalent to 30% of the total agricultural land available) and 170 trillion liters of water (enough to fill Lake Geneva thrice), is used to produce food that’s wasted — food that is “ugly.”
>Farmers work hard to cultivate and harvest their crops. 20–40% of this crop comes under the category of Wonky Produce — the perfectly healthy and ready to consume vegetables that are misshaped or disfigured and are basically not appealing to the human eye. The farmers are not able to sell these kind of vegetables and hence they have to be dumped in landfills or wasted in some other way
These vegetables are just as good as the regular vegetables, the only difference being, they are not appealing to the human eye.
Here’s a startup that is solving this urgent problem:
Farm Theory is a vegetable delivery service in India where we source ugly and imperfect produce directly from farmers and sell to kitchens who don’t care about the external looks of the produce.
🚚So how they are doing it: by building a supply chain
As per Sakshi, “We set up Collection Centres (CC) in the farming villages of Karnataka. These farmers sell out their entire crop to TFT, thereby realizing 20–30% more revenue on their crop than a traditional market. We employ the women of that particular village to grade the vegetables in that CC and transport these graded vegetables to our warehouses in Bangalore. For this, we employ the young adults of that village, who also happen to be the children of farmers.
🥕Future Scope: The Farm Theory will be leveraging the use of Artificial Intelligence to regularise the Grading Procedure and quality checks of the agri-produce. This technology scans for shape, size, faults, and quality.
